Happy Friday! :)
Copyright and fair use are important terms, but many people don't fully understand them. These terms relate to people's ownership of their intellectual property, or things they made/came up with. Copyright is a legal type of protection - it gives a person ownership of their property, and makes sure that only THEY are allowed to use and distribute it. A surprisingly-unknown fact about copyright is that it's automatic - although it can be registered with the copyright office, it applies as soon as something is created or recorded. The only two conditions for this is that in order for something to be copyrighted, it must be original (creative - obviously not something that someone else made) and fixed (a person can see or hear it). Fair use for copyrighted materials means that ideally you would purchase a full copy of the work, or gotten permission from the person who owns it (it is illegal not to do so).
There are a few issues that come with technology in the classroom, but many of them can be adapted to and managed if you know how to look for them. A glaring issue in recent years is academic dishonesty, for example. Students have easy access to the internet and other resources, and a much easier time using it even while in a classroom where it may not be allowed. One way to limit academic dishonesty is to make sure students have all electronics away while test-taking, or if using a computer, make sure the test window takes up the whole screen so that students can't exit out of it. Another example of a recent issue is cyberbullying - this easy access to educational resources has also given students easy access to each other and made it much easier for anonymous bullies to exist. One possible way to limit this is to limit the sites students use while at school, but also to be open and honest with students and be a safe space for those incidents.
While doing the newsletter, I learned a few things about designing that ended up making my newsletter look much better by the end. One of these was the column function and how to use the space between and around the columns - I ended up using some of the space for icons, and other things that needed to be included. I also learned a lot while writing the articles. Each one was an informative topic already so it was useful to learn more about them, especially technology in the classroom, since that's what we are all here to learn.
